So how do you get a broken EZ-out out? Drill it with a titanium bit? Starter R&R is now getting complicated. What are the tricks/tips? Thanks.:(

I think your going to need a carbide bit. How did you break a ez out?

How large was your pilot hole? The easyout tip will break off if too small a pilot, if pilot was too large the easy out will tighten itself against the original threads and break off, either way I would take a chisel and try shatter that easy out, I've been in that scenerio before and was able to shatter the easy out with a small pointed chisel and a couple whacks of a hammer, then I drilled the hole out as far as I could go without ruining threads, took a chisel and caved in the sides of the bolt, finally got it out. You could always use a thread insert or heli-coil if you mess up the threads.

Left hand drill bits. Been in the same pair of shoes that is how I got out.

Irwin left-hand drill bits available at mytoolstore.com/hanson/hanson.html . Copy and paste and put a www in front of it.

You need a normal direction bit for an ez-out, and a LH drill bit for a bolt.
But I doubt those will help at this point.
Would bet pulling the engine for proper access is going to be the thing to get the broken parts out.

Is the bolt broken off flush with the block casting?

When I broke off an easy-out bit in an engine block I ended up drilling it out with a carbide (all carbide, not just coated) drill bit. Cost about $10 at my local used machinist equipment dealer.

I'll personally never use easy-outs again.

For where you're at, you may need to drill out the hole with a carbide bit and re-tap. Additionally, if you haven't gotten the engine out of the boat yet for proper access, I'd recommend that. Nothing will suck more than screwing up your block trying to cut corners....

It's a nearly gimme 3.0L engine to replace 2.5 that's quite tired. It is out of the boat. The easy out is the reverse twist kind, not the square straight one. How do you start cutting it centered in the hole, wrap the bit with tape? It's recessed up in the bolt hole. Thanks.

I'd punch it with something to get a good center point & then use a real small drill for the first pilot hole & progressively work my way up in diameter.....
Patience is the key with stuff like this......;)

All sugestions are good. However if there is clearance you can drill small holes along side the extractor and in a sence make it loose and pick it out. When all fails a die grinder with a small rotory file works well. Either way all solutions take time and patients. Some may perfer to try and weld to it and remove.

Ether way good luck and if you feel its beyond your skill, safer to take it to a machine shop than to ruin a good block.

Ditto on the machine shop idea.

If it's recessed in the hole, you could use a transfer punch to center for the carbide drill... but if it has a piece of easy-out in it, that'll be very hard to make work.

I'd suggest getting a carbide bit the same diameter as the hole and using the hole itself as a guide to drill out the junk. Plan on running a tap through afterwards to clean up the threads.

A carbide Dremel die grinder bit will bore through the easy out. Take your time and you can cut it into pieces. I've had to do this twice, once on my neighbor's motor home exhaust manifold and once on my father's F150 water pump stud (neighbor broke the easy out in his manifold so I used it as a learning experience - 2 weeks later I broke the one in the truck!). Worked great both times.

I have been thinking about it and since the motor is out of the boat you might try some heat, and drop some cold water drops on the broke bolt to shrink it quickly while using a pick to turn it out.

If you want to do heat, use a torch and then a can of keyboard cleaner turned upside down - the liquid will come out below freezing.

If you still have a stub of that EZout in there, have a welder weld a nut on to the EZ out. This makes getting it out "easy" (in most cases).. As you've got a stubborn one, it sounds like a reverse rotation drill bit might be worth a try before you use another EZ out.

I know he said his was recessed, but another trick to the welding a nut on a broken bolt that has some sticking out is to weld a flat washer to it first, then weld a larger nut to the flat washer. It's easier to get a good weld this way...plus all that heat can't hurt the cause either.

I'm sure it's just my skill level, but I can honestly say I've never once had an easy-out work. I don't even try them anymore.

I have never not had an easy out work. If the hole is drilled properly all the way through and thin walled and center they come out every time. the problem is most people dont have the patience to drill all the way through or thin walled and use the wrong size extractor.

It also helps to use a drill guide on recessed bolts.

I have also used ez-out's many times and only had them break once or twice. As mentioned earlier, I believe the secret is to drill the hole very central and make it as large as possible (leaving as little of the broken bolt as possible) and then use the largest ez-out that will fit in the hole. I often see people drill a tiny hole and use a small ez-out, this breaks every time!!
