My 1955 5.5 hp johnson got the whole ignition system replace last september except for the spark plugs which I beleive are the cause to my developing problem. The motor starts and runs but while running it will run real rough switching from running on one cylinder to two cylinders. It aslo won't idle because of this. Well today after not tinkering with it for about a month or two I decide to get a bucket and fire it up. After a few pulls it started right up ran but ran the same. I adjusted the points and still the same problem. So I attemped to to pull the fly wheel to and attemp to disconnect the old wires I got as far as removing the fly wheel nut but I couldn't remove the fly wheel. I know there is a certain way do this but I forgot how so advice on that would be great. Now my next question is what kind of spark plug wires I need. I was told I couldn't just go to an auto parts store and get them because they wouldn't run my motor right is this and if it is where can I get what I need. Thanks much Dan

Re: Fly wheel & SP wires

Dan, after removing the flywheel nut, you should use a harmonic balancer type puller to remove the flywheel. The puller uses three 1/4-20 bolts that screw into the flywheel. Resist the suggestions on using a screwdriver to pry up on the flywheel and pounding on the rim to try and remove the flywheel. The right tool will remove the flywheel without risking breaking something.
As for the wires, you were told right. Don't use automotive type plug wires. The plug wires you need have solid wire cores, typically 7mm. BTW, those solid core wires seldom need replacing unless the insulation is cracked etc. You can buy these plug wires off a bulk spool at marine dealers or from shops that repair lawn mowers, go-carts etc, just be sure they are multi strand-solid wire types.
