I have a '78 Taylor SS that has registration stickers from 98 on it. I have title and all paper work. My question is, I won't have to pay back registration or anything on it will I? Thanks

nope. well, if you been using it for 11 years without registering it, and you tell 'em so, they might ask ya for the money.............my guess is, it hasn't seen a lake since '98.

Correct, it hasn't touched water. I'll just tell them it sat and I bought it and restored it. Sound good?

Re: Texas Title Transfer Question

With all the paperwork in hand you can go to the TPWD website and download all the title transfer forms you need to fill out. Should cost you less than $50 to do the title transfer...course they will expect you to pay the sales tax on the transaction. If it was a gift, they'll want a statement from the last owner to that effect and if the person you got it from didn't have the title in their name, the game will get more interesting. Hope for the best, download the forms, fill them out and head for your county tax office...out here they're a lot easier to deal with on boats/trailer than the Parks/Wildlife office staff.

Hey, tm

Give me that again about the local tax office handling boat/engine registration/transfers in Texas.

As I recall you take or mail the forms to your nearest TPWL office...says so on the form where to mail them.

But I'll agree, if you can get the county tax assessor/collector to do it for you then go for it as they are a lot closer. Course you have to go there to get the trailer registration changed anyway as TPWL doesn't handle that.

Agree on only requiring a statement (truthful) as to how long the boat hasn't been used.

And yes it is slick to be able to download all the forms you need boat/motor/trailer seller's affadavit from www.

ya, its TPWD field office - did mine by mail. Went down to the Ft Worth office to get a replacement boatowner card.......real nice folks, they spent as much time as people needed to make sure they had the right forms & knew how to fill 'em out - made for a long wait.

Re: Texas Title Transfer Question

Well when I went in to register the Belle Star's trailer as homemade at the county tax office, the nice lady told me that they can also do the sales tax/paperwork thing on boats...all in one spot. I'm guessing she meant if you have the forms all filled out and everything, rather than mailing it to TPWD. Don't know...maybe I misunderstood or she was off the mark, this is way out West where we don't have much boat-able water to work with. Anyway, I heard that and thought...Wow! I'll remember that. Next time I won't even approach the dragon lady that runs the counter at our TPWD field office. The only thing more fun is trying to find out what Texas legally requires on small boat trailers...TxDOT tells you one thing and DPS tells you another, glad I'm smart enough to know I need a visible license plate, tail/brake/turn lights and fenders. The chocolate lab is optional, but I always take him along...he helps drive back when I'm real tired from cranking in the monsters!

You need safety chains too on all trailers in Texas except farm. Smile.

Might read up on brakes. I haven't addressed that lately but in the back of my mind is some memory of the ratio of the weight of the rig to the tow vehicle's weight determining if brakes are required in Texas.
