TD, it's an RDS-21, 1959.

don't have a 35 hp, but my 58 18hp did have the lock washer. I dropped it down in the hole changing the water pump and had to take the thing back apart again. Oh well.

I bet someone stripped the threads on the shift rod connector when they were doing an impeller change and the connector/connection separated. If the connector/connection is still tight behind the access plate, there's something amiss in the LU. They aren't hard to fix/reseal, but if you don't want to mess with that right now you can always find a known-good used LU as a replacment and parts donor. I found 2 for my 18 hp Johnsons on the auction site for not much money. You don't have to pull the flywheel just to inspect the coils...remove the recoil mechanism, 3-4 bolts and it lifts off, and look for an inspection plate on the flywheel. Loosen the bolt holding the plate tight, swing the plate out of the way and rotate the flywheel until you can look through the hole and inspect the coils. If their plastic covering is cracked, it's time to pull the flywheel and replace the coils...again not to difficult and not too expensive. Keep us posted.

Thx again every one :) I can hopefully get to checking things out within the next day or 2.

So it's a '59 then eh? Good to know.

I also got this non-running motor with the boat pkg I bought. Not sure if it'll be good for anything,...the guy said it might have some lower units parts that are usable.

Now that's a 1957. Should be pretty much the same motor.

If it was me, I'd be getting the 1957 working. But that's just me.

So I had a minute to take a peak...
Those coils look in pretty mint shape if you ask me

Yeah, those look pretty good. Does it have good spark? If not, the points probably need cleaning. Very cool to have a 57, too. I bet the lower units are interchangeable...ask over on the AOMCI board (Ask A Member at www.aomci.org) if no-one here knows for sure. I think they are hot- and cold-swappable, but may be wrong. Get em both running. I restored a 58 FD-11 18 hp and then some time later fell in with a 56 FD-10 15 hp which I got for parts...just to have another LU for the 58. After some TLC the 56 runs just as good as the 58...still need to redo its paint and decals, however. What kind of craft are you putting these motors on?

The gear housing will swap, but the water pump is a different design and will not swap reason being the 59 has a thermostat style block and head and has a recirulation pipe back to the water pump. the 57 only has one water pipe.
