Hi there, I have a 25 hp Johnson a 2000 and the other day at the lake it started not bad it ran ok when the engine was cool but as soon as the engine heated up it seemed to start missing and sputtering until I pulled the throttle back to about 1/2. After a while it won't run at all what could the problem be??...I put a new water pump in at the start of the year...how can I check the thermostat??..could it be the power pack?...I have another one of those. It ran good in the water tank at home...had lots of spark but it seemed under load it ran really bad....any help would be great!!

Thanks in advance.

P.S I had to use my trolling motor to get back to shore lol.

Since your warning horn did not go off,and you did not notice any excessive heat coming off the motor, im guessing you didnt over heat. Very well could be your power pack since only faulty under load. You can always try switching it with your known good one and see if the problem dissapears. You can test the t stats in boiling water, check your manual for when they should open. I would also try grounding out your overheat sensor to ensure that it is operating correctly, just in case.

ps: at least you didnt have to wear off the varnish on those shiny new oars, lol ;)
