This boat is new to me (96 Cobalt with 7.4L VP DP-s) so I thought I'd remove the raw water pump (belt driven) to check the impeller. It seemed ok so I reassembled and put on the water muffs but notice it is not drawing water in or providing water to the engine. I will replace the impeller but am wondering what other issues could be causing this? Any ideas would be very much appreciated. Note: I believe the engine was overheating before (temp gauge does not work) so I do not believe a new impeller will cure all the problems.

Did you replace the gasket or oring on the pump when you took it apart? If not, it may be sucking air around the gasket. If it sucks air, it won't suck water.

Don, I did not replace anything on the pump yet but will do so. Is there anything else in the water inlet plumbing that commonly restricts water flow? I realize changing the impeller and seals/o-rings is likely the only issue but thought I'd check out other possibilities while I'm in there.

Thanks for all your input...I'm a rookie with I/O's.

You could have a leak in the bellows from your drive??? Worth a look. Roy.
