A day after my last outing, I noticed a good amount of black sticky oil had run down one side of motor. It was comming from under the plastic collar under the engine, i took the collar off an couldn t see where exactly it was comming from, lt was comming through the area where the mounting arm connects to themotor.Looking from the top around the motor i saw no oil.My worst case thought is a power head seal or gasket.thank you.

Re: 89 johnson 88 spl oil leaking down outside of motor

On my 93 88SPL, I've had a dark dirty oil running straight down from the power head right below the carbs. I had the engine raised 90 degrees to the stern (steering wheel dead center). A week before, I had sprayed down the block with wd40 or something similiar. So I assumed it was the spray oil leaking out. But it looked more like burnt black dirty two cycle oil. I need to chase this down when I have a chance.

I have a '96 112SPL, and I had the same problem, after I miscalculated and put too much oil in my gas. I had a mechanic tell me that the excess oil that doesn't get burnt somehow makes its way out and down the shaft. Not sure I buy that explanation, but used that gas up measured correctly and don't have that problem anymore

Yep, it's a powerhead gasket. I had the same problem with my 83 Johnny 115. Thick black oil running down the side of the motor - right from where you describe it. This black oil has a definitive blackness - not like unburnt ful that comes out of the carbs when the motor is raised. I did a rebuild and finally got to the root of the problem.

Sorry for the bad news, but it really should not be too hard to pull the whole powerhead , replace the gasket. and set it back. Be very careful when re-setting the powerhead as it can be very easy to pinch the gasket and ruin it. You should have a helper with you to do this.

I do not know if you are going to be able to get just that one gasket - but maybe. I got a whole kit of gaskets as i was doing a total rebuild.
