Tilt / trim question

I know this is gonna sound kinda dumb, but I have never had an engine with tilt /trim. Does the trim actually raise the engine vertically ? Or does it really just move the engine horizontally on the pivot as if you moved it up another notch on the transom pin. I get a good hole shot in the third hole but not so great mph, the second hole give better speed but longer plane off, and the top hole gives best speed but takes forever to plane off. I have a 50hp 90 model that didn't come with tilt and doesn't seem to be a factory make for it. I'm considering re-engineering an old mercury unit for it, if my ex brother-in-law still has it lying around. (he owes me money so it 'll be cheap to obtain) Any reason this couldn't be done? I've already raised the engine an 1 1/2" on the transom which still leaves the cavation plate 2" below the bottom of the boat (cavation plate was originally 3 1/2" below bottom) and raising it any more to get it even with the bottom of the boat will require rebuilding, and raising the transom as I'm as close to the top of the transom as I can safely go now. I'm only getting 28-30 mph on a 15 footer and would like to squeeze every mph out of it possible as funds for a 70hp are not available right now and probably wont be for some time . any help would be appreciated.

Re: Tilt / trim question

Gday mate tilt/ trim doesnt lift your motor up it trims up to a point then raises the bottom of it, if you are able to pick an old tilt trim set up you could make a bracket that does both raises your motor to the right height and trims in and out.
