I've tried going through some of the older threads to find something about this, but nothing, I want to know how and if so with some diagrams to run 3 batteries, 1 to crank with, 2 for 24volt TM with one being used to run Acc's and then with those 2 batteries hooked to an on-board charger, then a perko type switch, to opt between the crank battery and one of the other ones to crank with??? hope this makes sense to someone!! Thanks

Re: Tm Battery hook-ups

I fully understand what you want to do, but I don't understand "why" you want to go through so much trouble and possibly create more electrical problems that take time away from fishing. A Perko (or similar) switch (OFF-BAT1-BOTH-BAT2) is fine if you are worried about having a dead start battery so you want a second battery as backup. It's obviously nice to be able to switch to BAT 2, fire up, switch to BOTH and go. However, you are talking about trolling motor batteries here -- and 24V besides. Remember also that to make 24V you have two batteries in series. The battery switch accommodates two batteries, not three. My point is, the engine (and we don't know what you have) would have to be run wide open for hours to fully charge two deeply discharged trolling motor batteries so having them on the switch in the hopes of charging them is just silly. For the cost of a set of jumper cables you can forget the switch, all the wiring, and simply jump the start battery from either of the trolling motor batteries if the need arises. Your on-board charger will be used to charge the trollers much more efficiently and properly than the engine. Chew on this for awhile. If you are really convinced this is what you want to do, I'll draw something up. But once you see what's required, I'll bet you change your mind. Just so you know, all of the connections between the batteries and the switch need to be at least the same size as the start battery cables going to the engine. Why? Because you intend to start the engine from them -- remember! That means you need big crimping tools to handle big lugs.

Yes, that's what I want to do... I want to run the 2 batteries in series for 24 volts for trolling motor, and charge them with an on-board charger plugged to 120 shore volts. I want another battery just for cranking and Acc's to be charged from the engine, what I need to know is there any logical way to be able to use a perko type switch for the cranking battery and 1 of the trolling motor batteries if the need arises, or like you say is this just overkill. This is on a 20' CC with 150 mercury with 82 lb motorguide TM. Thanks again...

Re: Tm Battery hook-ups

It is an unnecessary expense, overkill, and a potential wiring nightmare but I will create what you want to do. Check back tomorrow.

Re: Tm Battery hook-ups

Here ya go. Battery switch OFF = everything off. BAT-1 selected = only the starting battery is connected to the engine and only it will be charged when the engine is running. BOTH = Battery 1 and Battery 2 (one of the troller batteries) are connected to the engine and both will be charged when the engine is running. BAT-2 = Battery 2 (troller battery) is the only battery connected to the engine and only it will be charged when the engine is running. The trolling motor will have 24 volts available regardless where the battery switch is set. Accessories can be fed directly from any of the three batteries.

The on-board charger will charge only the two troller batteries if the battery switch is set to OFF. It will charge all three if the switch is set to BOTH, but Battery 1 and Battery 2 will take twice as long to charge as battery three because Bank 1 output is charging two batteries. Battery 3 will NEVER be charged by the engine.

www.cmsquick.com has good info on battery hook ups aand other switch situations. Cilick on "technical" in the port menu.
