I just purchased a new bayliner 175 with a I/O 135hp. After having the baot on the water a couple of times I have managed to break a chunk off a nickle size chunk from the lower unit. Is there a need to fix it anf if so how? It is located just below and behind the prop. I am sure that I am not the first or the last to messup like this. Please help.

If it's a piece off the skeg (the fin that sticks down) and the bullet part of the lower unit is not cracked or leaking oil, there is no need to repair it. If you have a Dremel tool or a small grinding wheel to chuck in a drill you might want to smooth out the jagged edges to prevent those from developing cracks.

should be ok, its aluminum, so would be mig or tig, not real hot. you should post a picture of the damage before you proceed, you can have quite a bit of damage before you need replacing

Post a picture.

You're better off cleaning up a relatively minor ding than doing any welding on that lower. The skeg gets some pressure, especially in turns and when you bump the bottom even lightly. Aluminum is weakened by welding, especially die cast as this is. If it major breaks at speed, it could hurt.

hope it helps
