I am about done

Okay I think I have some internal engine issues now. At idle I hear what sounds to be a bearing ready to go in my aq125. If I do decide to fix her what other engine can I hook up to the 270 out drive? Everything from the engine back was replaced/rebuilt 2 years ago but I don't think I want to throw anymore money into the aq125 engine. So at this point I may just sell the boat cheap since I plan on buying a bigger boat in Sept anyway, but if I decide not to sell I want to replace the engine with one that I can find parts with a little more ease than the current Volvo engine.

I have just finished replacing the entire fuel system but I think it is past time for an engine rebuild.

I used to have one of those engine/drive packages. I think it would be vastly simpler just to replace whatever has failed than to try and procure all the parts for another engine installation. New rings and bearings for that engine are very inexpensive and pretty easy to replace. The engine is shockingly easy to remove and install too.

Any idea where I could fint the rebuild parts for this engine?

Re: I am about done

I went back out and ran the engine and used a scope to listen. It sounds like it may be coming from the water circulating pump instead of a bearing. The new pumps for the aq125A seem to run just under $300!!! Any ideas where I can get an after market pump or a kit to rebuild my own? I hate to blow $300 on a hunch just to find out that it is a bearing.

Why not remove the pump from the engine, leave all the hoses connected so you still have water in the cooling system? You can start it up and run it for 10 to 15 seconds without any damage to the engine, but that way you can see if the pump was making the noise or not.
Obviously your alternator won't work as you have to remove the fan belt, but it won't harm anything as long as you don't run it too long.

Good idea. I will try that tomorrow and see what happens.

I think the prices may have changed over the years. I put together a list of parts needed for a rebuild including all of the gaskets and circulating pump. I can't see investing over a grand in this boat. I will still see if it is just the pump but if a rebuild is needed I think I will scrap the boat since I plan on buying a bigger boat at the end of t
he summer anyhow.

As far as engine parts, is there an automotive equivalent of that engine so you can just buy the parts at an auto jobber?? Is this engine raw or fresh water cooled? My AQ131 is fresh water cooled and I believe the water pump is the same as in automotive applications. That is not so if it is raw water cooled.

Have a great day,

Rob.

If you are not convinced it needs a rebuild, don't do anything.

In 1997 I dropped my block, pistons, rods and crank off at a local machine shop and told the owner to measure everything and let me know what needed to be replaced. He procured new rnings and bearings, hot-tanked the block, painted it and installed the bearings for the balance/intermediate shaft. I think the bill came to $200. The bearings and rings are the same for the car application of this engine. I bought a new gasket kit locally and never got around to re-assembling the engine until 2002.

Water pumps can sound like a bad bearing. I cannot imagine you'd need a marine version though. It's only pumping anti-freeze mixture like a car.
