short shaft, long shaft?

i have a 55 hp long shaft and a 40 hp short shaft the 55 needs some work what would be the pitfalls to useing the short shaft in the meantime?

For one thing, it won't reach the water.

Might not reach the water enough to ensure proper cooling, and certainly won't reach the water enough to do anything more than idle around.
