Hello all, am new to this boating scene and Im trying to lube my steering cable cause my steering is quite stiff. How do I know if its a bad cable or I just have to grease it up. Can someone tell me the correct procedure to lube the steering, My engine is a 225 evinrude 1987 Thanks

Well, the cable can't be greased, but the motor's tilt tube where it goes through certainly can. In fact it's mandatory! Disconnect the cable nut where it fastens to the motor, and see which is tight. Odds are that it's tight in the tube. Let it go long enough and you won't even be able to get it out. So do it now. Take it out, and clean the crud and rust out of the tube, put some waterproof marine grease on it and reassemble. That's easy to say, now for the bad news: On a lot of motors, you can't get the cable out without removing the motor from the transom. Tough cookies, you still gotta get it clean and re-lubed.
