Next step?

I'm working on removing all the items from the transom on my boat to re-core it, and I'm down to removing the gimbal and transom parts for the sterndrive. I've read the manuals from boatfix.com, and while they are pretty close (I have an 888 sterndrive) I do have a question:

Can I remove the transom kit in one piece, or do I need to take them apart bit by bit as specified in the manuals? I had the impression from other posts here that I could just undo a number of bolts and drop the entire transom assembly off?

Follow-up question: How does that steering cable detach? I must be stupid, can't figure out how, and I don't want to break it.

Pictures are here, they're big to allow zooming in:

Re: Next step?

Yes it can be removed as an assembly. You still have to remove the Y-pipe. Note the pic for steering cable instructions.

Reel Poor, not to hijack but that steering cable looks like the one on my 888. Can you see where there is a zerk fitting on it? I can't find one on mine. I currently have my risors off so this would be a good time to get back in there and do something.

btw, did you have to reload your avatar? If so, I'm afraid that I don't remember where I got mine.

I don't see one Boom in the pic. I'll look at one I have in the shop and see if I see one.

Yes I did have to reload it. Pointer had the same problem but Ryan reloaded his. Maybe an e-mail to Ryan and he can restore your also.

Re: Next step?

Great, thanks Reel Poor. I was worried that I'd have to keep track of all those parts after I removed the bellows, shift cable, gimbal, all the nuts and bolts, etc.

I'll get the steering cable off (good eye Boom, this is my 888) then the Y-pipe (looks like only 2-3 bolts) and then I should be golden for removing the transom assembly.

I've already started removing the inside starboard fiberglass on the transom after I took those pics, and it looks like the wood on the sides is rotting, even though the double thickness (two 3/4 inch plys at the gimbal, only one farther out) is sound.

Re: Next step?

Ok, well good to see I am on the right track......
Thanks for that Reel Poor, much appreciated!

I got rearened on the way to the water and have to change the entire gimbal asembly. After I pulled the engine found my forward transom plate/ rear motor mount plate is busted too. I think I can weld that but I have to get it out first.

So......
After disconecting the 3 points. I couldn't just "slide" it through the tube. So I tapped it in with a rubber mallot......... yea now I am stuck, cant go forward and cant go backwards.... any ideas?

I'll wash it out and lube it up and hopefully it will just "slide" back in, when or if I can get it on out with out having to cut it out and having to replace the entire steering cable and potentially the tube too.

Any suggestions before I use such drastic measures would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Edited to add:
Mine is an 888 too
