Decorated eggs are much older than Easter, and both eggs and rabbits are age-old fertility symbols. The Passover Seder service uses a hard-cooked egg flavored with salt water as a symbol both of new life and the Temple service in Jerusalem. The Jewish tradition may have come from earlier Roman Spring feasts. The ancient Persians also painted eggs for Nowrooz, their New Year celebration falling on the Spring Equinox. This tradition has continued every year on Nowrooz since ancient times.


Easter egg origin stories abound—one has an emperor claiming that the Resurrection was as likely as eggs turning red (see Mary Magdalene); more prosaically the Easter egg tradition may have celebrated the end of the privations of Lent. In the West, eggs were have been forbidden during Lent as well as other traditional fast days. Likewise, in Eastern Christianity, both meat and dairy are prohibited during the fast, and eggs are seen as "dairy" (a foodstuff that could be taken from an animal without shedding its blood).

Another Orthodox tradition is the presenting of red colored eggs to friends while giving Easter greetings. This custom had its beginning with Mary Magdalene. After the Ascension of Christ, she supposedly went to the Emperor of Rome and greeted him with "Christ is risen", as she gave him a red egg. She then began preaching Christianity to him. The egg is symbolic of the grave and life renewed by breaking out of it. The red symbolizes the blood of Christ redeeming the world, represented by the egg, and our regeneration through the bloodshed for us by Christ. The egg itself is a symbol of the Resurrection while being dormant it contains a new life sealed within it. One would have been forced to hard boil the eggs that the chickens produced so as not to waste food, and for this reason the Spanish dish hornazo (traditionally eaten on and around Easter) contains hard-boiled eggs as a primary ingredient.

In the North of England, at Eastertime, a traditional game is played where hard boiled pace eggs are distributed and each player hits the other players egg with their own. This is known as "egg dumping" or "egg jarping". The winner is the holder of the last intact egg. The losers get to eat their eggs. It is also practiced in Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia, the Republic of Srpska and other countries. They call it tucanje.

I hate the attempts to remove any indications of religion in our culture. Hate it!! This is not because I am violently religious as some of my defenses of religion may seem. I'll once again repeat, I don't even go to church and I had a reasonably extended atheist and agnostic period in my life. But I see it as rewriting history, censorship, cultural denial, appeasement, plain old ordinary carp. Last time I got cranked up about this I reminded some of the renaming of cities in the USSR. Many of the emigrants to this country came here because we DON'T do this stupid stuff. They get it, they know how far it can go.

Agreed like it or not, this counrty was founded and matured on christain value's, why we are trying to shed ourselve's from our root's is ignorance or arrogance i would think.

But the world we live in today is becoming a bit warped, There is a organiztion called the ACLU it will defend the NAMBLA crowd and it's right to free speech and yet they go into court to eliminate religion from public view....

Im getting a bit tired of event's such as these........

I get chided often, on this forum, because of my statements regarding the motives of our Democrat/Liberal brethern. I was even admonished, by one, to show some proof of my claims regarding the their Socialist motivations . I have claimed that many of the lofty sounding causes they expouse were for the sole, undisclosed, purpose of leading this country down the path to Socialism.

I contend that on the whole, the ACLU is widely supported, admired and accepted by todays Democrats.

Here is a statement from the founder of the ACLU.

....In other words, disguising their true intent.

This is the group that the Democrat rank and file admire and even though their goal may not be socialism/communism, by supporting their Elite, in all their fairness and tolerance carp, that is where they are, defacto, taking us. All one has to do is open their eyes, connect the dots, smell the roses. You are known by the company you keep.

If this is not enough, go check on the funding sources for the ACLU, aside from court ordered awards, they are all Democrat organizations that supply the vast majority of funds.


Today, the Democratic party = Socialism, both directly and indirectly. This is why they are taking Easter out of the Egg Hunt.

Just to add to Booms comments, the separation of church and state has been twisted in recent years to means something the founding fathers never meant it to mean. They wanted to ensure there was no theocracy; the church wouldn't rule the country in short.

It NEVER meant you couldn't have a symbol of religion on government grounds or a symbol of religion on display. Even the Nazi's, who I think we ALL agree weren't a Christina organization, had Got Mit Uns on their military equipment, belt buckles, etc.

We pass bills and make laws in this country that are designed to protect the majority. Yet when it comes to religious protection, the left and the ACLU is embracing the exact opposite. if ONE person is opposed, it can't be done. Since when does the feelings of one trump the feelings of the masses? If I sit down to a table with lamb for dinner, and 6 of my family members want lamb and I don't, I get something else. I don't force my will on the others. We've forgotten that common sense approach in this country and the longer the majority sits on their hands and lets the minority dictate the more we truly give up.

People on this site often get off on a rant about giving up freedoms like smoking, and the patriot act. How can you honestly get upset that a few smokers have to quit, yet you'll support something that makes the religious majority give up a symbol because a handful of people complained? Doesn't make sense. Then they hide behind the idiotic separation statement. When we try and elect a Bishop President and install Cardinals and Monsignor's in the house, get upset. Till then, practice what you preach and be tolerant. A Jew, Christian, Muslim etc. has as much right to see their symbols displayed and customs honored as much as the secular non religious have the right to expect NOT to see it. I'm not Jewish; therefore I don't go to the Synagogue. If you’re not religious, don't go to an Easter Egg hunt. How flipping hard is that?

The story was on the local NEWS here. As I recall the reason stated the promoters wanted to encourage the non easter observing public to feel welcome, and to remove any religious connotation from the event.

There are a lot of people who hunt eggs on Easter that never step inside a church.

Most any holiday is promoted greater by those who stand to cash in on the hype.

Eggs are in the greatest supply this time of year.
