Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Hey Skargo,
how do you upload pics that they come up in the post as yours do and not as thumbnails as mine do?

Thanks. :D

Instead of attaching them, I link them to pics I have hosted elsewhere, typically in my facebook albums.

For example, is I right click on one of my photos, I can "copy image location" and then you just click the "insert image" button that is yellow, and has the mountains and sun in it, in the response box here.

Silver eagle, we were at Lloyds creek friday-monday. What kind of boat do you have? I was on my 33 Executive called Tailwagger. We were nearer to the house in the deeper water. Just got home today.

We were in a 24 ft Pontoon boat. Starcraft. It had a green canopy. I pulled in at the far left then when we left I made a wide circle to the right until I came up near the dock and went out by the tree swing. I saw one other pontoon boat there.

It sounds like you went in the right way,
did you go in where the red arrow is?

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

OK, so you want the free boat story, here goes it. I stumbled upon it one day on Craigslist for a free boat in Darlington and I was living in HdG at the time so pretty close. The guy responded to me and said sorry he had two emails before mine that wanted it. The guys email was his name so I looked up his name in Darlington and found the address and thought I'd do a drive by to see if there was even a boat there and sure enough it was and I wanted it as it was love at first sight. So a couple days later he emailed me back and said that the other two were no shows and if I wanted to look at it and take it, it was mine, so I did and then I had it hauled to me ($200). The guy had it at his family's property and they were about to sell the land and he had been to busy over the past few years to run it so it sat shrink wrapped, the shrink wrap finally gave way to sun and weather and thus causing the upper deck seating to be ruined. Also water seeped in the cabin through a broken seal causing bad mildew which I remedied with two $2 bottles of Zep mold and mildew remover from Home Depot. I had the engine fired up for a brief moment by putting gas in the carb, so I have more to do there obviously, but overall I think I got very lucky and got a really cool boat, and now you know the rest of the story...

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

You're welcome, we love pics!

x2, keep them coming guys! I put a bunch in my thread about Washington DC by boat but i know a bunch of you saw them on FB too.

and now you know the rest of the story...

Sweet deal man!! I would love to buy a cabin cruiser in the 25 - 26 range with a flybridge that my wife and I can stay on for an extended time. (Long weekend, occassional week, etc.)

I keep thinking about getting an old one for free or next to nothing but then i know that the most expensive boat you ever own is the one you got for free. Altough it looks like you got really lucky!! Congrats

Thanks, we'll see how lucky I am when and if I get her on the water next season. My plan is to work on her throughout the winter and then sell the cuddy to pay for a slip in the marina next door. Hopefully all works well, but I figure even if I put a new motor and drive in her it would still be a really good deal, and I am going to attempt to do all the canvas and vinyl work myself.

I don't think vinyl work looks to be too hard if you are handy and have the right tools. I would give it a try too if I were you. Keep the cost low and enjoy that boat like crazy. Also, if you don't want to do the measuring, cutting, sowing of the vinyl, check out copycatcovers.com altough I never used them, I almost did once. Anyway, you pull off the old vinyl and send to them. They make news ones identical so it will fit perfectly and send back to you. Then you reinstall. Might be worth it to you, don't know. Good luck whatever you do.

thanks, but I don't have the full canvas, the only parts I can figure out for sure are the side window panels, there are some other pieces as well that are in crap condition and partially rotted and so far I can't tell what goes where, but the windows are the only thing that seems to be complete pieces.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

When I went through I had four feet of clearance.Tide was about half way in.Plenty wide enough. I wasn't moving very fast.New to me so I felt my way in.
Width isn't the problem, depth is. I forgot you were in a pontoon boat. For some reason I keep thinking you are in a bigger deep-V boat. Pontoon wouldn't have any trouble with those cuts, in my opinion. Pontoons typically don't require very much water under them. We had a 28-footer that we used for gunk-holing all the time in those little back creeks the Bay seems to have plenty of.
But, on Skargo's little bit of chart, you can see the depths up along that shoreline....2 and 3 feet at low tide so not only is the cut tough but the approach is fairly risky as well.
I can tell you, from walking around in there, that coming in through those cuts, you are coming into some of the shallowest water in the basin and must navigate VERY carefully to avoid dinging the bottom with your prop. So once again....Good job! But not for everybody to attempt.

If you are interested in doing any of the vinyl on you seats, etc. they do that as well. Good luck fixing her up!

When I did it I was told that there was only one entrance so when I saw another boat go in there I thought that that was the only way in.When I left I came out the other way.I was half way out when a road hog came into the cut so I heald back unti they passed. Then we went to Turner's creek. Not what I had expected. It looks better from the road. Sunday we went to Cabin John's cove. Almost empty. We're heading in a few minutes .Were going to our summer place at Elkview Shore's .It's on the water near Earlville MD.

Who is heading out tommorow? We are heading out around the Gunpowder area. Its suppose to be a beautiful day. I am checking weather to see if we are going to take the sail boat or power boat. If its like today I think the sail boat will be the boat of choice.
