I have a '84 Johnson 50 . The problem is that the tilt arm/tube is rusted out. Does anyone have any tips on replacing this part. Will heat help to remove it? Thanks, T.

Hey Terrulle....how ya' doin? I had an 84' 50 horse for many years. Great engine.

No sure as to what your reffering to by "tilt arm/tube". Can you elaborate a little?

Basically the "tube" that the motor hinges on while its mounted to the transom. It passes through the two arms that have grease serts in them. I'll try to post a photo tomorrow. Thanks for the reply, T.

They can be a real buggar. Heat will help. But will also destroy any plastic bushings in there.

Yep, can be a real pain espesially if it's a salt motor. You will have to hang the engine off the transom to get it off.

Darn BRP site is still down. What ya' should do is get a service manual, OEM, to help yourself out. It will guide you through the process of removal and reassembly.

Thanks, Yes, it is a salt water engine. It's been out of the water for awhile though. I'm putting together a pontoon boat and in the meantime am trying to get the motor shaped up. It runs great. The tube is basically the only thing wrong with it. Here's a photo of the problem.

WOW! That bad boy is really gone! But some good news....most of it is gone already....d:)

I would really try and hang the engine so you can get to the tube. I would think you may be able to drill out most of it if you have a drill that size. Just becareful that you don't get into the engine part. The tube looks bad enough that soaking and heat ain't gonna' be enough.

EDIT: Will the engine still tilt up or is it froze in place?

Well... I'll get it out one way or anotherd:) I am ordering a manual from i-boats. Do you know where I can get this part? I looked at i-boats but didn't see this particular piece along with bushings, etc... I appreciate the help, T.

Oh, It's frozen in place. I can probably get it to move with enough force. I'm not going to hurt it anymore than it already is.

You can look around at maybe the local dealership and find a used one. Or you can order from any J/Rude dealer. PN is 351896. Set you back about $56 and tax.
