Got a stuck drive shaft seal cap that won't come off-93 48

1993 48hp Johnson

I can't get the cap that holds the seals under the water pump. Tried rust buster, heat and tapping it with a bolt. It is pot metal and chips easy.

Is there a trick to getting one off? Thankyou much.

ba....hopefully you removed the three retaining bolts from the housing assembly?

This whole assembly comes out. What I did for places like this is, I took a larger screwdriver and heated the end and bent it to a 90* angle. It works pretty good to get under the bearing housing assemblies to get them out. Once you get it to move a little, it's just a matter of moving it back and forth to get it out.

It's a good idea and I tried it with an L shaped screwdriver. The tip was ground off so it would get inside. I hooked the screwdriver in one of the recesses on the side. When a pipe was put on the handle it broke the screwdriver in two!.

I either need a stronger screwdriver or the shaft will have to come out.

Never tried that before. Looks tricky

That cap should not stick like that. Was there water in the gearcase?

Isn't the lower part of the cap a cylinder with an o-ring that fits down into the LU housing?? It can't be pried out with brute strength. It needs to come out straight, like a piston out of a cylinder. See if you can get it to turn some and then work it out from 2 sides.

Yes there was salt water in the gear case, probably for a long time.

I took a piece of wood and put it on the edge of the studs on top of the cap and hit it with a hammer so it might turn, but no luck.

If salt water got under the edge it could have rusted it shut. Don't know yet.

ba....if you can get hold of a seal puller that could go down an catch the lower edge of the bearing housing and attach a slid hammer to it, that may be enough to at least get it started out or losen it up. From your post's, it doesn't sound like the assembly has been out in recent recorded history.

Well I couldn't get it loose so I took it to a mechanic. Can't win them all. Thanks.
