I am looking at a 1992 Cajun 1850 bay boat. It has a 1992 Johnson 115hp motor on it. It has 130-140psi on three cylinders and about 40psi in the other. Assuming it's not just a head gasket, I am trying to figure a "worst case" estimated cost. What do you guys think "at worst" this couls cost? Also, will other power heads fit that lower unit?

are you doing the work?

It depends on the extent. I am familiar with engines(automotive, motorcycle) but have never really dug into an outboard. So, lets assume I will have it done someware if it's serious.

it could be $200 or $3000. depending on whats wrong. i realize thats a broad range, but it's realistic. i thnk i would negotiate a price, pending you changing the head gasket before, purchasing. if it's ok, then make the purchase, if still bad, it's time to renegotiate. the cost of a head gasket, and a little time in the sellers driveway could be good insurance. of course there is always a chance of breaking a head bolt.

If it requires a tear-down, you could probably pick up a rebuilt short block for </= $1600 and swap out the rest of the parts. Question has to be, "Is a 1992 115HP worth the money and effort?".

Thats kind of my thoughts. I may just end up selling the lower unit on ebay or something, the guy just had the entire lower unit rebuilt. And then I'll look for another motor. It's a nice 92 cajun cc, with a like new trailer for $1k. I cant really loose. even if I did have to dump $1500 into the motor thats still only $2500 for the whole boat.
What is the going rate for a motor early to mid 90's, 100-130hp going for these days?

This deal would all depend on what you are giving for the entire rig. I'll tell you that a salvage place will only give you about $600 for that motor.
