Johnson 35HP (1983) Wont start. Backfires.

I am a new boat owner and I have a Johnson 35HP (1983). It wont start it only backfires. I have run a new hose and connections from the gas can to the engine and put in new spark plugs. Any Ideas?

Does it backfire out the exhaust with a BANG or out the carburetor (sneeze)?

If it is out the exhaust, try swapping the spark plug wires first.

If that doesn't help you may have a sheared flywheel key.

timing is definitely off, so flywheel is off our your trigger need adjustment

Coil leads swapped on the power pack?

I agree with the flywheel key,if its jut a bit off your not running.

Out the exhaust, with a bang inicates a timing issue. It is easiest to make sure the plug wires are on the right cylinder. The top coil goes to the top plug.

Coils can also have swapped place on cylinderhead, making wire placement looking right, but being wrong. Not first time, done that myselves.
