Alpha1 shift cable routing

Hi. Is it absolutely necessary to route the shift cable under the engine and up the starboard side or could it be routed straight up the port side and over? It's a 1992 Wellcraft 5.7L I/O with power steering and there's a lot more room on the port side. This is my first boat and first time working on one. Any input appreciated. Gary

It needs to be done properly. It really not long enough to go around the other side. Usually if you try to route it differently it will rub the coupler, the input shaft or something and destroy it in short order.
Stick with the book.
Here is a picture that shows the proper routing. I highlighted it in blue.
