I'm just curious, can you rig up 500 tons of TNT to go off pretty much at the same time?... or I should say, could N. Korea?

Do a search on "coal mine blasting". Conspiracy theory?8)

Well, maybe 8) I was looking at the seismic charts of the blast and it just didn't look "fast enough" to be a nuke, so...... I was wondering if it was possible to "fake it"

Don't know how old or accurate the data is, but in Ohio alone, half a million tons of explosives a day were used. Of course it didn't all go off at the same time.

There are two ways to wire explosives so that multiple charges detonate simultaniously. One is det-cord, which is ignited and burns at something like 3000 miles a minute. The other is using an electrical circuit, where the detonation signal travels as fast electricity.

Another possibility is that the nuclear detonator exploded but did not result in the cascading atomic reaction in the core that is the actual bomb.

Thanx SW, I know about det cord and elect. Firing, I just don't know if you could do it with that amount of explosives or if the "pressure wave" would disrupt the "circuit/ det cord" chain.

Another possibility is that the nuclear detonator exploded but did not result in the cascading atomic reaction in the core that is the actual bomb.

The "trigger" would only be around 100 lbs or less explosive... a "fizzle" might be a possibility. That's where the reaction "blows it's self out” and ends the cascade before it goes critical.

I'm just wondering if it's possible the NK faked the whole thing.

We will know as soon as the sniffers finish their jobs. It will have been the real thing if radiation is detected.

Yes, it can be rigged that way,

I agree with llfish and believe it will be found out with radiation detection.

IMO I sincerely doubt that it was faked. The seismic readings lean towards nuclear which are different than conventional explosives.

It may have been a "low yield" test or a test that resulted in a low yield. Either way low yield is still very dangerous garbage when put in the air!

TNT is a 2 stage explosive and it is really quite stable. In fact you can throw it in a stove and burn it.It will not explode.
DET cord would be insufficient to make it explode all at once. One would have to surround the entire package with electric fuses that would activate TN charges, which in turn will set of the TNT.Even so there would be a fair chance that part of the TNT would never explode because it would be blown away from the igniting shock wave before actually exploding.

My bet is their test was a real nuke, but they failed to construct it properly to get the full yeild. Things have to be pretty precise to have full fission of all the material.

I am believe you would be able to detonate ANFO all at once.

I don't think that is what the N. Koreans did but it is a possiblity. ANFO could have been easily disguised in cement trucks. Easy to make, easy to use. Used all the time in mining because it is stable and conforms to the shape of the drilled cavity.

I thought of that, and they have been getting aid in the form of agricultural supplies for years... and still starving.
