I was just told my Mercury 02 60hp EFI 4 stroke froze up
and would need a new power head. The warranty ran
out last summer. I have less than 25 hrs on the motor.
Do I have any options with Merc to help cover the cost?
Does this engine have any history with this type of problem?

What was the cause of the failure?

The mechanic said it wasn't anything I did (ie maint)
but it may have been built on a Monday or Friday. The
engine was professionally winterized each year

If the mechanic is the one that sold it to you and the one that did the winterization, I would ask them to contact Merc.

You can always call yourself, the worst that can happen is they say no.

Someone else may know more.

They should be able to verify the hours by hooking up to the ECM. This may help your case if you only have 25 hours on the motor..Need to find out the cause for sure to proceed forward...Doesn't matter when it was built, there's still a specific reason for the failure...Make sure they(The dealer/Mech) verify that the oil level in the motor is/was correct and that it was the correct type oil for your motor(In writing). This could be very important down the road....
