Question on fuel stabilizer?

I understand that I should add fuel stabilizer during the off season to prevent varnish buildup in the engine and carb. Does this mean that I need to pour a bottle in the tank before I head in to the ramp for the last time this season so it can be in the tank and in the engine and carb?

I recommend Sea Foam with every fill-up. Also recommend storing your boat with a full tank of fuel, it helps keep condensation from forming.

Avaliable at most auto parts stores.

Yes I always put mine in before the last run so it can mix thoroughly with the gas and get through the entire system including the carb.

Xtraham, you made mention of "today's fuels". Is it the ethanol that is a problem? Are the fuel lines deteriorating? Where should I disconnect the fuel line in order to run the carbs dry?

Re: Question on fuel stabilizer?

assuming you have an outboard, disconnect the fuel line at the engine let it run until it shuts off, then do the recommended winterization, ethanol is not a problem with fuel lines/hoses regaurdless of the myths you may here if treated with the proper stablelizer,

i used to do this too. but now have the question. while running the carb out of fuel and oil. what lubs the engine in the last moments before the carb is dry, whilst it is real lean from lack of fuel, and oil?
the drain them dry idea sounds ok though.

Re: Question on fuel stabilizer?

there is still enough lube, how many folks run out of fuel before switching tanks while under way, when the fuel/oil mix stops so does the engine,...and the lube in the fuel is collective the fuel is not................

Re: Question on fuel stabilizer?

i'm with ya xtraham up to
and the lube in the fuel is collective the fuel is not
i don't understand collective.
if ya got's whatever mix of oil and fuel. when the bowl is full, the engine see's the right amount of fuel, and oil. when the bowl is almost empty, and running lean, wouldn't you be lean on oil too...
i understand this don't happen for very long before it dies of lack of fuel. but, to me it still seems at the last moment it is lacking fuel and lub....help enlighten me......:) i want to understand....
yep, i've run my 2 stoke out of fuel many times w/o ramifications....i suppose this could be the crux of the statement....
not tryin to stir up controversy. just want to undertand..
in the end, i'm still goin with stabil.....:)

Re: Question on fuel stabilizer?

fuel oil mix passes through the crankcase and collects to the moving parts, not being burnt off internaly, the fuel mix is (sucked) into the combustion chamber and burned thus after the lubricatation has taken place

Re: Question on fuel stabilizer?

it is still better to drain the carbs, but for those not mechanicaly inclined running dry is better than a full bowl of fuel sitting for the winter season
