Starter question??

I've got an '87 60hp Evinrude, just put a brand new starter on it. Went out this weekend, couple of times the starter got stuck on. When I turned the key to the off position and even took it out... the starter would just keep spinnin. Had to disconnect the battery to get it to stop. Let it sit for awhile and it would be fine. Any ideas??

Re: Starter question??

Either the bendix stuck on the shaft (grease it), or the solenoid stayed engaged. Could also be a sticky, corroded, or wet ignition switch.

If if happens again have a hammer handy and tap the solenoid. If it releases then the problem was a sticking solenoid.

Re: Starter question??

I greased the bendix... actually silicone spray. That was the only thing I could think of at the time and the only thing I had handy.

The wet ignition switch rings true... It stormed on my boat while it was uncovered the night before. Plus it didn't do it later in the day after it got a chance to dry out.

Since solenoids are cheap and easy (and starters aren't), I think I may change the solenoid just to be on the safe side.
