They used to put them in sorta drag boats here years ago lilmandavis. I think they usually went with old two speed autos coupled with a direct drive inboard type setup, gave them reverse too.

I can't recall actually seeing an installation except at the helm. Why upside down? I am a total auto tranny idiot, so would need some help with that one . . .

How about a variable pitch prop?

The aviation world developed one... so why not on a boat. Have a 4 blad prop that can chance pitch to help keep the engine in the best RPM range. Of course... this would just add to the number of complex parts submerged in the water... yikes.... maybe old technology is just fine I do like the Variable tranny idea. Audi and others are learning alot about these things (of course if Audi looked at their warrenty costs on the ECVT they might have wished they never when down that road.

[colour=blue]Back around the late sixties/ early seventies, 2 speed tranny's were fitted to GM vehicles (in Aus, maybe not the U.S). Some bright spark decided to try it behind an inboard boat motor but because of the angle required - they fitted it upside down (the tranny). It became a popular retro-conversion for a while.

The 'upside down' thing is from the dark depths of my feable memory, I could have it wrong.

The 2 speed trannys were used in drag boats. they were mounted backwards, not upside down, the engine was mounted backwards, and the drive came up to the tranny, then back to the prop. they could undergear 1st for a quicker holeshot, and overdrive 2nd for a bigger top end. but this was coupled with big hp motors, ususally fuel injected or blown. usually for 1/4 mile use only.... as for new technology

so when i finish my 572, do think that would qualify for big hp engine? the farther i go with this engine the more im worried about putting it in anything!!! maybe its time to find a drag project!?! i dont know if i want it blown or not yet.

Just curious, 1999 boat with points. Some one else sked also, what kind of boat and what engine do you have?

Volvo has a nice unit with the prop (s ?) on the front of the drive.That's technology.And it's available to everyone.Did I mention available only with twin deisels,and over 30 ft if I remember correctly.
