I am very new to boating, I just purchased an 1971 17' Winner Wildcat deep V fiberglass fish and ski. with a Evinrude 125hp mod.# 125183C engine. the prop is 13 1/4X17. The problem I have is the boat is a real slug, the boat has no speed odometer or tack. so I am not sure of the speed or rpm. I would estimate it going about 25 or 30 mph. and it struggles to pull a ski or tube. I have been told to try a different prop but no one can tell what would be the best prop. to try. the boat also went trough about 15 gallons of gas in about 2 12hrs/. i have also been told to check my WOT rpm. I will do that next time i go to the lake. I would like to know if anyone can tell me where I can get the manufacture specifications for WOT rpm and prop. size. Thank You

Re: Evinrude Prop

WOT rpm is rated at 5500rpm I believe.

What prop you would need depends on engine set up and what rpm your currently turning. You really need an accurate tach to determine what you need.

Engine set up on the boat is also very important. Just a rule of thumb here, the anti-ventilation plate should be nor more than an inch below or above the keel of the boat....that's just a rule of thumb mind you. If the plate is hanging well below the keel, your losing performance. Raise the engine so that the plate is at least 1" above the keel.

Do you have trim and tilt?

Newbie question but what exactly is the ventilation plate? Are you talking about the water bypass?

Thanks,

Re: Evinrude Prop

the vent. plate is the flat surface just above the prop. we are dealing with a 1971 engine, check compression first, remove all the plugs, put in forward full throttle, insert guage and turn engine over 4 times, register reading on all cylinders and post results. lets find the health of the guts. hate to bring this up, but it s a 71 hull. could it possible be water logged? the foam floatation dan absorb water and weight several hundred lbs, effecting performance.

Re: Evinrude Prop

First thing I ordered a service manual today. checked compression 1105lbs#- #2 105lbs- #3 110lbs- 4130lbs#-. I have tried to post a picture of the back of the boat and engine with no luck. if someone would give me an e-mail address I would send a picture and would like some advice if it is set up right. How would I tell if it is water logged, I live in southern Arizona. I am going to try to get to the lake this weekend if I do I am going to get the WOT rpm and take a gps and get the mph and I will post them as soon as possible. Thanks to everyone who has helped with suggestions,

Re: Evinrude Prop

he sent me the pictures, think set up problem can be made a lot better by moving the the trim pin. my other concern is waterlogging.

Re: Evinrude Prop

after some investigating at nada your hull dry weight is 1100 lbs, engine 270lbs, figure 400lbs for trailer. so your looking at 1770 lbs without gas and other things in the boat. that the rig to a public scale and have it weighted (usually$10.00). if your more than this you are carrying extra weight, and it's will be time to investigate.

ok guys he wieghted in at 2550lbs, trailer looks heavier than i thought, plus a good amount of gear. when skiing what is the load in the boat, #people weight, and where sitting.
