TACH PROBLEM

When i turn the ignition switch to the on position the tach needle pegs.

All other guages work. Can you help me trouble shoot. It is on an aq200c with 305 engine

Some tachs do that,. Does it work correctly when the engine is running?

This is recent. Prior to this it was at zero until the motor was started then it read normal.

sounds like an internal short. does the tach read correctly at all when the engine is started? have you been under the dash wiring recently?

with the key on and the wire removed from the neg side of the coil, the needle will peg. Check to make sure you do not have a bad connection or broken wire to the coil.
