Hi all, I've got a problem, My microsoft word program will not open. The program starts then just sets there. It won't open and the only way to get the startup window off is to manually shut down the PC.
Does this sound like a virus maybe? All my other programs open so it is only this one. I can't even back-up the info so I can uninstall and reinstall it.
Anyone have any ideas?
thanks BMW

Sounds like it got corrupted. No big deal, just re-install right ontop of it. Pop the disck in and run setup again and it will most likely fix it, and you shouldn't loose any of your old documents.

In the add/remove programs folder, you will see where it says Microsft Word, click on it and click remove. It will ask you if you want to remove install or repair, click on repair. That is how it works on mine. This happens all the time on my pc. The Word program takes up alot of space and memory.

Well, I tried the reinstall, no help. Also tried the repair option, no help. Also when windows boots back up I get a MSscript error window that opens about twenty times, have to click on each window to get rid of it. I think its bugged?

Beg, borrow or buy 'Nortons systemWorks'. It'll find and fix any corruption/error problems. It is the single most useful PC program on the market.

Aldo

Errors such as this are often caused by invalid info or corrupt normal.dot file. I think this a file that reinstall does not replace. Find all instances of this file and and delete. Then try. A new one will be created if Word starts. If unsure, rename all instances of normal.dot to something else. Then try to restart Word.

ndemge, It is windows 98, I'm located about 120 miles east of you, in what was known as brick city, firebrick capital of the world, that is till synthetics took over and they shut down all the brick plants.

You have a virus or bad spyware.

Try Ad-aware spyware removal it's free and make sure you update it before using it.

If you or someone can reinstall your OS "98" that would be best.

And stop using Internet Explorer browser thats part of the problem. Switch to firebird "mozilla" or Advant broswer.

Re: computer program advice

We're all making a few assumptions about what might be going on here. I'll take my shot now. (The other suggestions were generally pretty good, by the way)

Windows 98 is a rickety system from the git go. Can work fine for many, but it takes little/no provocation to get weird all by itself. Windows 2000 or XP are much more stable, though still not perfect. W98 likes a lean environment without a whole lot of extra downloads and other programs running in the background. Runs fairly well like that. If you have any, I recommend uninstalling most of your free download type programs (or at very least set them to never load until you ask them to by setting the start-up settings in the system config folder) then run Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware both. Might help stabilize your Windows if it hasn't gotten too close to melting down yet already.

Norton System Works... good product but do NOT trust it completely. It is not as stellar as it once was, and it will get over ambitious if you allow it to. Can cause deeper problems than you started with if you are not careful. It will help fix a lot of problems, but it is not a panacea. Do not allow anything other than its anti-virus to run in the background unless you are specifically targeting a particular known or suspected problem.

Yes, Mozilla/Firebird are excellent browsers, though I doubt they will do anything to help with this given problem with Word. I do tend to favor them over IE for web browsing, though.
