I have a 1986 85 HP Force outboard, model 856X6L. Went to the lake for the first time this year, came right back. Checked the starter solenoid and found it to be bad, replaced it and here is what is still going on. Turn the key, press in to activate choke, nothing, solenoid attempts to set choke but will not. Turn the key to start, the starter solenoid will click and the starter turns but does not engage into the flywheel.

I checked the circuits with a multi meter and getting 12 volts thru out the system, battery is freshly charged.

Anything further to check/do before I but a new starter and choke solenoid???? SELOC manual is not very helpful............

Re: Help, Starter and Choke Solenoid

Speaking generically.Be sure ALL connections are clean and tight especially the grounds.Be sure the choke is not binding. If starter is spinning up to speed the bendix probably needs lubrication.Wd 40 will serve temporarily but a more oily spray will hold up better.

Re: Help, Starter and Choke Solenoid

Take the battery in and have it load tested if connections are clean and tight. It is hard to believe you would have problems with the starter and the choke solinoid at the same time. When you mention the starter will not engage flywheel are you saying when the gear hits the flywheel it will not spin or it does not even get to the flywheel and stops spinning or continues to spin even though it is not getting to the flywheel.

After you charge your battery leave it disconnected from anything for a day. Then test it with a DC Volt meter. If you are not reading at least 12.6 volts your battery is probably toast or your charger is not producing enough power to fully charge it.
