I have a 45HP. I recently rebuilt the Lower drive. It had been running great, till yesterday while we were out I went to put it in forward it would not engage. reverse is fine. I took covers off and readjusted the linkage and it started to go into forward again. Then it happened a second time. I can feel it engage in reverse, but when I go to nuteral and forward I can not feel it engaging. I can see the shift rod go up and down when I shift from reverse to nuteral to drive. Any help would be appreciated!

Re: 45HP will not engage into forward

Put the shifter in reverse. Have someone slowly advance the shifter to neutral while you are turning the prop with your finger.(For safety make sure battery is disconnected and spark plug wires are pulled off of spark plugs) When you feel the shift happen to neutral have the person doing the shifter stop moving it. Mark the spot on the shifter where the movement towards forward gear makes no clicking with prop being turned by hand in either direction. This should be where neutral is. Now have the shifter move forward till you just feel the forward gear engage the clutch. At this point you should still have about an inch of movement towards forward gear on the shifter.

The lower unit I got on ebay barely will allow me to get forward and reverse throughout the shifting range. If I have to sacrifice one it will be reverse. I finally fine tuned it so I can just get reverse and have good engagement on forward.
