I purchased a 1985 Bayliner Capri with newer trailer last week in very good condition for $800.00. I mixed fuel 50:1 and it had no power at all, I could have rowed faster. It obviously scared me and I thaught I purchased a lemon. A freind recomended running it straight gasoline to see how it ran but decided to run it again very lean about 75:1 or even a little leaner and it ran awesome. I ran it again at 50:1 just to see if it was something else and it ran good for a couple of minutes then bogged right down and lost power again. Is it possible that it likes very lean fuel and if so will it hurt it in the long run. I have a mercury and an evinrude on other boats and never lost power like this before. Carbs are clean and new plugs. Could it possibly just like very lean fuel?

Re: 1985 Force very sensitive fuel mixture

Hello MCchannel. If you keep running that motor at 75 to 1 you are going to fry the cylinders. Go back to 50 to 1 which is 2.6 oz of marine outboard oil to 1 gallon gasoline. Make sure the oil says TWC3. Your problem is probably a gummed up carb or the carb mixture adjustment is too lean. Please post your model number and horse power. If it is a 50 HP or less and you have one carb you will need to adjust the mixture screw on the carb which should be located at the top of the carb above the choke. Slowly turn screw clockwise while counting turns till it is lightly seated. Then back it back out to where it was before. It should be somewhere around one full turn of the screw. Try opening another half turn counterclockwise and let it run for a few seconds if the motor will even start then turn it back to where it was originally. There might be a small bit of crud stuck there and by slightly opening it to make it richer it could dislodge the obstruction. There is a detailed instruction on how to correctly adjust this screw in the clymor and syloc service manual. It would be one of your best investments if you plan on keeping this motor.
