I just bought a bayliner with a 85hp force. one stator blue wire the was fried. I replaced the stator and the rectifier. engine still wouldn't crank. I checked the timing and it was firing at TDC cranking speed instead of 28 degrees. I had to disconnect the timing rod and move the trigger way back to get to 28 degrees. The engine cranked and ran smoothly. I thought maybe i could just install a longer timing linkage rod However the trigger would not be able to move anymore if full throttle was engaged. Could this be the CDI box?? Help anyone?

The timing should be close to TDC at cranking rpmswith all linkage connected and adjusted. The 28 degree mark should align at full throttle and about 5000 rpms. There also should be a spec for full throttle, cranking rpms.

Thanks for your reply. Why would the engine crank and run at 28degrees? Im pretty sure the manual said cranking was at 28 degrees, and WOT 32 degrees. But I will recheck the manual.

Those numbers are only for setting the timing, which is set at full throttle, when you pull the throttle back the timing returns close to TDC. Are you skipping item 8 fig 29 page 161? If the engine will not start with the timing correctly adjusted, you have a nother problem.

Thanks for your reply. I plan on doing some more troubleshooting on saterday. I guess what is really perplexing me is that the engine is running smoothly a 28 degrees cranking. Could this be that one or both of the CDI boxes is malfunctioning? would the engine run at all if the stator was hooked up wrong? Could the trigger be bad or hooked up wrong, or flywheel magnets come loose? I will take your advise and check the manual where you referenced. I will take some more notes and repost saterday night.
once again thanks.

Im missing something, which isn hard for me to do. What is the timing if all linkage is connected, adjusted, and throttle is at idle? You put the flywheel key in and torqued the flywheel nut right.

YES THE FLYWHEEL IS INSTALLED CORRECTLY, I CHECKED TWICE. WITH THE TRIGGER LINKAGE CONNECTED, IT WAS FIRING RIGHT AROUND TDC. BUT IT WAS SPUTTERING AND NOT STARTING. AS I SAID BEFORE IT CRANKED AND RAN SMOOTHLY AT 28DEGREES. I DIDN'T GET AROUND TO TROUBLESHOOTING FURTHER ON SATERDAY. I HAD TO WORK ON MY WIFES HONEY DO LIST BERFORE SHE HAD A MELTDOWN. I HOPE TO GET OUT IN THE GARAGE TONIGHT.

BILL
