So as some of you know I did a restore on this 18' Supersport and put an older 1978 140hp crossflow johnson on it. Its been a good engine, but I've been trying to find a 150hp looper to really max out this boat. I got a donor boat and am in the process of making the switch. Hoping in the next few days to have it in the water. She did 38-39 with the older tired 140. So I'm really hoping to see mid 40s with this newer 150. I have a water pump coming and will be mounting tomorrow, more pics to come!!! Anyone know of another Iboats member with an 18'SS and a 150 on the back?

Welcome back!

Most stop at 140 J/E (usually the HP max rating of an 18' SS).

What's the weight difference (v6 vs v4)?

319lbs for the v4 140 and 370lbs for the v6 150. The plate on my 18SS says max horse power 150.

There are so many Starcraft rebuild threads that I can’t keep up. I love your paint scheme on your ss Russo, once you swap over, consider doing a light restore of the paint and decals on the 150. It would highly compliment the work you did on the boat. Good luck, and have fun.

Thanks Chrisp!!! I'll post some more pics today when I have the motor hung. I actually sanded and painted the hood last night. Great minds think alike lol I left the decals alone, just did the grey its close a little lighter than stock. But looks much better. Now to try and stay cool 🥵🥵🥵 its a hot one!!!!!

that's great...i've never seen a 150hp rating on an 18'...and you're going from a engine to prop rating so quite a bit more shake-n-bake!

try your best to hang-on to that wheel when you're taking videos for us!

Got the 150 hung. It looks HUGE 😳😳 The trim and tilt on the motor works flawlessly but the controls at the helm are intermittent, shake the wire the right amount of times and it works lol So I gotta run a new wire. Its always something, but if this is all it is I'll be happy. The water pump came today. So I'll prly start working on that tomorrow. And drain the LU oil. Maybe I'll get you guys some speed numbers this weekend. Also attached a pic of my HP rating plate, I assumed all 18' SS were rated at 150.

Yeah my 79 V5 18'r is also rated at 140 HP but I've since found that a "newer" 115 Merc is the perfect motor on an 18'r for speed, weight and fuel economy.

I wonder why mine got a 150 rating? Also I still love the V5 waterman. Never even knew they existed before seeing yours. Wish I could find one to restore!!!

Another data point - that '79 SS 18 V5 I/O I had was rated at 170 hp, and had the 470 Merc which is close (160?).

Anyone know where I can find someone who remanufactures these data plates? My guy I used has had some quality control issues. Thanks!

sorry if I’m hijacking. My apologies.

Got a water issue. I posted on the Johnson forums, but since I know yall are very savvy, i thought I would post here as well.

Good evening Gents! I have a new one I haven't come across before and needed some guidance from you fine people.

I hung a new to me johnson GT 150 off the back of my starcraft. Fired it up and it had a weak tell tale and no water coming out the exhaust holes and the buzzer was sounding. I ordered a water pump. Replaced the housing, the O rings, the impeller, the key the whole 9 yards. Put it back together and I have a strong tell tale but still a buzzer at the control and no water out the exhaust below the cowl. I figured it was a thermostat issue. So I pulled those and dropped them in a pot of boiling water and they both opened as they should. Any thoughts why I would have a strong tell tale, good thermostats but still an over heat buzzer and no water discharging from the two exhaust hole up by the cowl. I do have a good amount of water coming from the hub of my prop. Think this is a cant run on a hose issue?

You must be running on muffs. My understanding is that its normal to not get any discharge through the 2 T-stat ports when on muffs. I'll do muffs for a quick start-up / disaster-check ...and only idle.

Either run it in a tub or tow it to a ramp before throwing more parts at it.

Yeap running on muffs. I've had a lot of engines and ran them on muffs, and always had water come out the two T-stat holes. But ive heard as you said that sometimes you can't. I'm gonna load up today and head to the ramp and check it out.

Water won't come from the exhaust ports unless the motor is actually in the water. How long does it take for the alarm to sound once fired up and is it a solid alarm or intermittent?
