I get so many packages delivered I can tell the sound of a UPS truck from a mile away. They make a very destinctive sound that I never hear in other trucks. Does anybody know what engines they use? Within the last few months it sounds like they added turbochargers to some of the trucks.

Just curious... :)

ZM, i was lead to believe that UPS had a design & specs for their trucks. They hand those specs & designs to Ford, Dodge, Chevy, whoever, and they have to build to those specs. But I think the manufacturer uses their own engines/trans in them. So it could be any engine, I think. This was old info, about 10 years ago, so this could have changed.

The UPS truck that comes to my place out in the styx is powered by a Renault common rail DI turbodiesel. Nice, mellow sound.

Anytime I hear a new sounding engine the driver is in for the third degree about it. :)

There are a wide variety. Some gasoline, some diesel and some nat gas as Pony has noted.

We built them a custom natural gas, turbo lean-burn, version of the GM 4.3 V6 about ten years ago.

Well I guess that everybody was heard that UPS and Fed-Ex are going to merge to form the largest package handling service in the world starting the first of the year. The new company name is going to be Fed-Up.......

That's interesting, I thought they were all the same. Maybe I'll ask my driver what kind he's got next time I see him. They're definately all diesel and mostly turbo around here.

Interestingly it seems Fedex home delivery and DHL use normal V8 Ford gasoline vans...seems like diesel would make alot more sense.

When my buddy was a UPS mechanic in the 90's all the trucks around here were changing over from GM L6's to GM V6'S. I just msn'ed another buddy that is a UPS relief driver and asked what they are running now. When he gets back to me I'll post back.

They were gm gas in the big brown delivery cars in 1981 when I worked there.

Some of the newer/smaller (look like a motor home) trucks are Daimler/Chrysler diesels.

I heard a distinct Cummins sound from the monster that came past the school today. It was one of the new longer UPS box body units.

Here is the answer I got from the driver. "the gas ones use a 4.3 Chevy engine and the bigger ones use an International Deisel"

The gas powered UPS trucks used Ford in-line sixes (300 cid) for eons. They will still be around for many years to come. That's the sound that everyone remembers.

They are now (new) diesel powered with Cummins ISB-5.3's.

Alt Fuels-Natural Gas-are used in very few markets. The 300 six was adaptable to many different fuels.

UPS is one of the best run fleets in any business. They use what works. They are NOT happy with the "new" products they are using.

Believe whatever you want.

The BIG brown gas trucks (before 1998)used the Ford 300 six. I was involved with UPS and the 300's. After that, I cannot say.

I DO know they use the Cummins ISB, however.

The UPS drivers I know don't know, or care.

Ok ZmOz heres the scoop. I just got off the phone with the central NY district shop Foreman (the same guy I said was a machanic in the 90's). Seems we are all right. This is what he has in his fleet not in any particular order but he said other locations may have others.
1)300 Ford 6
2)292 Chevy 6
3)4.3 Chevy 6
4)International T44E V8 diesel
5)International VT365 diesel"or something like that"(new)
6)Cummins 6 diesel
7)Mercedes diesel
