hey i just baught a 94 sea rayder with a 90hp sport jet, this is my first boat and i got a deal for the boat and trailor at 900, the problem is in the motor, the guy i baught it from says he doesnt know whats wrong with it other than it doesnt make spark. when i got it home i took a closer look at it and it seems like the engine was taken apart and rebuilt recently but who ever did it did a messy job, theres grey silicone up and down the side of the motor like he used it as a gasket sealer. basicly it comes down to a motor thats been messed with and i dont know what the guy did to it. he said he baught it at the beginning of summer and drove it 2-3 times and then docked it for a month, then when he came back to drive it it wouldnt start and said there was no spark. but i dont know if i believe him.

anyways i havent checked anything out yet but i would think theres more than just electrical problems. so im looking to maybe swap motors with either another 90hp or the largest i can fit in there.

so my questions are, whats the largest i can swap in there?

and if i cant swap a larger motor, then where can i find a good condition motor that will fit in my boat? ive looked onjline but cant find anything ....

any help would be apreciated, thanks:)

No spark is a common problem with these motors . You have to stay in the Sport jet family as crank splines are unique to these engines . Before you give up on what could be a good rebuilt motor , run a compression test and post results

alright i was about to check the compression but thaught id look around the top at some wires and stuff, it appears as the stator gas 2 yellow and 1 black with yellow stripes, would this be the black stator or the red?

Yellow do come from the stator , they go to the voltage regulator , stator wires will be one red one blue to the switch box or white/green and green/white to the switchbox , the black/yellow is the ignition kill wire

Time for the WD40 trick , pull the plugs , spray each cylinder with wd40 turn over 3 times by hand , repeat 3 times let it sit for a day do it again then put the plugs in wait a day then retest the compression .

i also noticed a piece of steel broken off, according to diagrams from what i can tell its the timming piece that sits on top of a rod and might have been bolted or welded under the flywheel or stator thing...ill put some pics up tommorow.

also the gasket from the carb to the engine was sticking out in some places so i can be sure i need a new gasket, and if im going to replace one i think i might as well do them all, or just do the ones that need it? i figured they must sell gasket kits for this engine?

If you just need carb gaskets then go to autozone or advanced and order fel pro part number 35395 , it is a thermostat gasket for a 87 subaru but it fits and works perfect .

Re: 1994 sea rayder engine swap?

See if you can find the part number on the flywheel and post it up , it is not a 1994 90 hp sport jet motor , I think they tried to swap out a force 90 hp engine.

Re: 1994 sea rayder engine swap?

where would i find the flywheel part number?i looked quikly on the top of the large gear(what i think is the flywheel)...all i could see is a patent #, if it helps here it is-3.961.618.-3.741.185

but when i baught the boat the guy i baught it from gave me a paper with what he said was the engine serial number, dont know for sure if its the right one(havent looked myself), but it is oe069266

Re: 1994 sea rayder engine swap?

I have seen this before , it is a force ignition system all the blue stuff is force. the problem is without an engine serial number I can't ID the block .. post up as many part numbers as you can find and we can try to sort this out . Also there is a large wiring decal by the exhaust manifold on top of the engine , post up a good clear pic of it and it may help . I have heard of people getting these engines running on a force system but never spoke with someone that has . If it is a true Sport Jet block then your best option may be a complete CDM conversion kit .

Re: 1994 sea rayder engine swap?

Is that broken piece attached to the timing adjustment screw? I am not that familiar with these motors yet, but cannot imagine what sort of accessory or component would be there?

Re: 1994 sea rayder engine swap?

93baylinerjazz--yes from what i can see in the diagram in the manual, that broken piece is part of some sort of timing, and with a quick look i would say it used to attatch under the flywheel...

kend
--so in all truth whats my best option, should i take the engine out the boat and have my mechanic friend look at it(free of charge) he works at a harley/bike shop and has alot of experience with 2 stroke engines, but im not sure if his knowledge applies here....bur he does have over 20 years of mechanical knowledge/experience.....

i do have all winter to work on it so its ready next spring....

so should i remove the motor and put it on my work bench to work on? or is there an easier way to get access to all the pieces?

Re: 1994 sea rayder engine swap?

ok, looking further down without taking anything apart i found these numbers, but dont know what they are, they were located near the rear of the engine(below spark plugs)

seeing how complicated i think its going to be, i think i might go to a place that repairs boat engines, but they may not be able to find pieces, but if i have any problems ill just ask here...
