I bought a little tach off ebay for less than 20 bucks as I recall. You put a strip of reflective tape on the flywheel (which comes with it), install battery power and have at it. I bought it for an ATV since it had some kind of automatic, variable ratio, belt drive mechanism and I had to set the idle rpms right on to get it to work correctly. It's digital and good to 10k revs as I recall.
