All,
There don't seem to be many 30' Luhrs Alura threads regarding ownership and information. Would be nice for other owners to participate in this thread with helpful information.
I purchased my boat out of Tampa Florida and had it shipped to Seattle, Wa.. Hard to find these boats on West Coast - There was a 30' Alura here in Seattle which I looked at but had small 130hp diesel and speed was only 8 knots. I needed something that could make 15 knots or better.
My boat:
1987 30' Luhrs Alura - Single Yanmar 240hp Diesel (580hrs) w/Bowthruster.
Previously owned by Airline Pilot and meticulously maintained.
Previous owner to Pilot was gentleman who owned a Florida Marine Hardware company and installed the Yanmar 240hp Diesel engine and added a nice quiet A/C-Heat system as well as a super strong anchor winch.
I have kept very accurate records of speed and fuel consumption over my past 6 months of ownership
3000RPM recommended cruising RPM - 19-20mph - 4.5-5 gal/hr
2800RPM - 17-18mph - 4 gal/hr
2600RPM - 16mph - 3 gal/hr
2500RPM - 15mph - 2.5 gal/hr
*I cruise at about 2800rpm for nice smooth 17-18mph. No matter how much weight I have in boat the speed and fuel consumption remain the same.
I spent a good year researching the 30' Luhrs Alura and found that 1987 & 1988 models were manufactured by the Hunter Marine Co. and are significantly lighter and stronger with Honeycomb Epoxy Core hull. Due to less weight, these models attain a little better fuel economy and performance.
These boats come in various forms of condition - I looked at 6 of these Alura's while shopping and found a couple of them to be in horrible un-maintained condition. The boats needing work or in rough condtion sell in the $13K-$20K ranges - Those boats that are in better condition seem to be in the $22-$30K price range and nice Diesel equipped models fetch $28-$36K
*You are much better off and smarter spending more money to buy a better example boat then trying to restore.
One of the most desirable aspects of these boats is huge rear cockpit, tons of storage in several rear hatches and bait wells as well as great access in engine compartment with single engine models.
Cabin is really nice for 2 people with nice size head/shower and good storage as well.
*The only drawback I find is sleeping 2 people when table is dropped and V berth is set up - The storage shelves (which also have slim cushions attached for backrest while seated at table) narrow the width of the V berth as well as cover part of the feet area which I find make the sleeping a bit on the tight side. I enjoy a comfortable bed. I am thinking of cutting and adding hinges to these shelves so they can be lifted up out of the way for more room during sleep.
These boats are great for fishing/cruising for 2-4 people and overnighting 2 people comfortably.
The Yanmar Diesel engine is superb and much nicer than the old smokey Volvo TMAD 41 I had in a previous boat - The Yanmar is smoke free and the oil stays nice and clean even after 50 hrs.
The Yanmar is super economical.
Here are some recent photos - I just hauled her out for bottom paint and zincs - Also replaced both trim tab rams due to leakage.
