Bring your camera here to Lake Erie's north shore when the wind is whipping into Port Dover harbour from the south at 30 plus MPH if you want to see stupid boat tricks. I was interesting to see that the 1 boat that took the chop best was the 12 foot inflatable.

Didn't look like much fun for the little boats, but I didn't think it looked all that bad either. Probably one of those things that is worse if you're in the boat. I wonder how much water is under the boats in that inlet. Any chance of bottoming out in a trough?

Yeah, none of those boats was in any danger, but the perception from the helm was probably different. Over the last 10 years of boating in 4 different boats, I've learned that the passengers (and I) will throw in the towel long before the boat is at risk. It just gets too uncomfortable, and sometimes a little scary looking..

I didn't see much of an issue with the small boat other than possible motor problems, seemed to be starting and stopping. I had a similar size boat many years ago and would be out in that type of water frequently.

Is that not the truth? I didn't see but one or two, but all occupants on the police boat had PFDs. But as seems typical, the police boat felt it necessary to pull over a boat right smack in the middle of that mess!

My first experience on the gulf we came into an area like that with a following sea and breakers behind us ... the dude doing the driving knew what he was about in that stuff, but I got a pretty fast lesson in maneuvering. I've since done it one time myself, not "easy" but not a killer either if you pay attention.

I was with you Sam, wondering about the dude in the little tri-hull. :cower:

Videos like this are why I stick to my little Kansas lakes. Water like that would freak me out, unless I was on something 30+ feet.

No PFD's, saw one little guy wearing one. The Coast Guard crew was was ready though, even their boat looked like it had a big orange PFD wrapped around itI

I have been in worse wave conditions on Lake Erie trying to enter ports on Ohio's northern shore when there are strong north winds. Don't have the current to deal with so much but the waves can make it fun.

In 2007 our boat club had a cruise to Sawmill Creek Resort. The wind was blowing and we had 6' to 8' rollers out of the north. The opening to the harbor at Sawmill Creek is not very wide. Maybe 35' wide or so. Someone here can probably come up with a more exact figure. I'm going from memory. Anyway. the only way to make it through the narrow opening was to come in under power. There was no way to idle into the harbor. It was challenging but we all made it into the harbor safely.
