suzuki drive shaft

i have an old suzi 1983 DT 140 that runs like new but the gear case is cracked & the top carrier bolt mount has corroded off, it is a short shaft
i bought a 1997 DT 140 gear box complete in great condition but it has a long shaft, can i switch the short drive shaft from my gearbox into the long shaft gearbox without to much drama ?

I'm only going from the parts catalogs but a lot of the internal parts are different between the two. That includes the drive shaft and the gear set. However the case itself is the same. You would probably have to change over most everything and re-shim it.
I don't know if you consider that too much drama or not.
