EFI Fuel pumps Volvo

Ran boat out of fuel while winterizing and then was unable to restart after adding fuel. Book makes mention of damaging fuel pumps if you run out of fuel.<br /><br />Is it likely? If so which one. Book mentions high and low pressure fuel pumps.<br /><br />1996 5.0 Volvo EFI<br /><br />Thanks<br />Brian

You may not have a bad pump yet, fill the fuel filter (Under the low pressure pump) with gas and reinstall it and try this. <br />Turn the ignition switch to ON, you should be able to hear the pumps run. Turn off.<br />Do this several times after you fill the fuel filter in order to fill the reservoir on the back of the engine. Then try to start it.

Is the low pressure pump the one at the right hand lower side of engine (while looking at it from inside boat)?

Just realized that in 96 the 5.0L was a Ford engine. Not sure which pumps they have.<br /><br />EDIT:<br />Found a diagram of your engine.<br />The low pressuer pump is #43 the High pressure pump is number 20.<br /><br />

That's my pump for sure. Will change filter and try priming as previously suggested. Is there a way to test pump by applying power?

To prime the system you may also want to try this: Hook an outboard tank to the inlet fitting on the filter housing. Then squeeze the primer bulb until it gets tight(just like an outboard)You can even temporarily run the engine on the tank. Be certain to reinstall the boat's fuel hose before you leave the dock... ( DOH!! )

hello<br /> the low pressure pump is #43. sometimes they dont like to prime if the filter is empty. fill the filter first. sometimes I spray fogging oil up the pump intake first. good luck and keep posting
