I broke a part off the alternator of my 2000 Volvo Penta GS 5.7L, it is the black box as shown on the upper right of the below alternator:

What is that little black box and what does it do? Is it replacable or do I need a new alternator? It seems to be a device to bleed off positive voltage as it is connected to both the positive and negative.

Thanks for the help.

May be voltage regulator, not sure. I could probably go to auto electric repair shop and ask. they could probably fix it for you asap.

Re: Volvo Penta Alternator Part

Thanks, I ran the boat and did not notice any difference in voltage output, so I assume it must be a filter of some sort?

Re: Volvo Penta Alternator Part

It is a external capacitor, I think it is too reduce noise in the electrical system. See if there are any local starter/alternator rebuilding places, I bet they would have one.
