I just bought a boat with a 2008 Volvo Penta 4.3 GL-J stern drive. It has developed a belt squeal that starts just above idle and also is over heating. It would seam that these two are related and have to do with the circulating pump or pulley. Just not sure how to pinpoint the problem. Anyone heard of this before?

Belt squeal and overheat?
I would look at the raw water pump to be frozen. (bad bearing)
Loosen the belt so you can turn the pulley. (Raw water pump) Should turn easily. Lower left of engine

Do agree, but one change, VP motor, should have a crankshaft mounted water pump

Remove belt and rotate all pulleys, alternator, water pump, idler and check for play
Remove sea water pump cover on crankshaft and check impeller
Check belt tension (assuming serpentine)

Following up on the issues/repairs: I replaced the impeller, idler pulley and belt. All is well! Thank you!

FYI - The first belt I got was aftermarket, and a piece of s#$t. Then ordered OEM and totally worth the extra $.
