Mystery JB weld

Was crawling around my new to me 5.0 GXI and noticed this area with what looks like JB weld. Any ideas of what this could be? It's near the start on the starboard side. I've already figured out that the block was changed out at some point after 2014 because its all black and I have photos from when it was originally posted for sale prior to 2014 with the original red block and red raw water pump. The current block is all black and the water pump looks to be a replacement. Original owner is MIA so unfortunately no history....

Also, what is that sensor? Just curious....

The jb weld is plugging the hole for the dip stick. They have the option for it on both sides, usually it's plugged with a welch plug I think. The sensor I'm not sure, knock sensor?

Grub54891 has it right being the knock sensor and the other hole location for the oil dipstick....Some just cover the hole up for good measure like that or maybe they didn't want to go find/buy the plug somewhere.
