I had overheating problem with VP exhaust and found that the risers should be replaced every 6 years. Mine went 10 before replacing. When I took them off and set them on the ground, about a pint of sand came out. Apparently I had sucked up a bunch of sand when running shallow water. The risers can be found after market for cheap -- and they are easy to replace. I got mine from http://www.michiganmotorz.com/?gclid=CKre8dqAickCFcOGaQodqCsDag
The alignment is not a trick -- there is another bellows at the bottom of the exhaust pipe the connects to the riser -- i.e., there are two bellows (rubber couplings) per side. If they are turned a bit, then the alignment will be off.
