Mercruiser 165 Hp and am looking for information on replacing the remote shifter. Replaced the lower shift cable last year and then had a boat mechanic adjust the linkage. He said that the neutral position is sloppy because of the worn remote shifter.

I would spend $2 on nylon bushings vs $300 on a new control, however it is your money

Are the nylon bushings part of the remote controller and are those what generally would go wrong when a controller looses the solid feel of going into neutral? And the question I meant to ask was where to find out about which new controller will work and the installation procedure.

pull the cover off your controller and look. the controller is only part of the gear select system. you also have two cables, a shift plate assembly, etc.

normally wear items such as cables and bushings go bad long before (as in decades before) the control actually goes bad.
