'68 Seabird 307ci SBC OMC Electric Shift (looks like a long shaft)
I know the saying "If it 'aint broke don't fix it"...BUT...Fearing a breakdown in BFE (or swap the E with an O for ocean if you prefer) I decided to take apart my entire outdrive because the boat is new to me. WOW it is a good thing I did.
Everything is in parts now on my bench after a day of fiddling. All except for the foreward gear and coil in the lower case which requires the special tool to turn the driveshaft while holding the pinion nut with a 1 1/16" wrench. The gears all look great and shift so I'll leave this part in.
My upper gearcase casing has a crack/hole and my propeller shaft has a big old crack in it as well. A nice spiral crack that means torque to me if it's like an axle shaft. Probably a prop strike....may explain the perfect prop with fresh black paint. Hmm...a real jerry rigger had his hands on this one. Put a new prop on a severly cracked shaft for personal use....I think even the brave dare not.
The gearcase was patched on the side with what appears to be bondo then re-painted....seriously. It can be scraped off with a screwdriver forming a crusty powder. Looks like a fix-to-sell not a fix-to-use solution. "Nice...Job!!"
-quoting me when I found it.
My casings got contaminated with water and left the fun film I'm sure you are all familiar with. How do you wash this out? Do you run the unit with fresh oil then keep changing it with new untill it is clean or is there a special way to clean it all out? I'm considering degreaser then electronics cleaner or brake cleaner followed by a couple days of evaporating to get the moisture out.
I am looking for the upper gearbox or just the casing for it. I am also looking for the propeller driveshaft. It looks like these will work from a v-8 model electric shift from 64-77 or so. If you have these let me know through a PM. An entire outdrive would be useful too....short or long shaft electric shift. E-bay has them but i'm looking for a cheaper option.
Who has or sells an entire re-build kit for the electric shift's? ...gaskets and o-rings...I can make gaskets and buy o-rings but a kit would sure be nice.
BTW after a 1/4 turn on the prop a large c-clamp worked awesome to slide the prop off. I used rags under it but the pic (will add pic later) is just to show how it fit up.
