Steering cable to outboard question

I have a 9.9 Evinrude that I would like to attach a teleflex rotary steering system to. My question is, where the cable attaches to the outboard, there is a metal covering on it that does not fit in the outboard. Does this cover just come off, or do I have to do anything special. Sorry, I
fairly new to boating and this is my first boat project. Hopefully the photo's will help explain my question better. Thanks for the help.

Refer to your first picture: Then slide the end of what you see inito the hollow tube (called the tilt tube) on your engine as shown in picture 3. The tilt tube is where the big nut is just to the right of the white vertical post. The nut on the cable screws onto the threaded outer portion of the tilt tube. The end of the cable will stick through the other end of the tilt tube. Again in picture 3, you will seel the steering link pointing downward and to the right. That links fastens to the end of the steering cable.

That is my problem. The steering cable does not fit into the steering tube. That aluminum covering over the cable is the same size as the steering tube, so only a inch or so goes in. I assume I have to either take that aluminum cover off, or possibly the nut at the front
end of the steering tube.

Fist, being a new boater I have to ask, Is it the correct steering cable? I think it is standard practice to thoroughly clean the inside of the tilt tube when replacing a steering cable. I had one that wouldn't fit until after I had cleaned the inside of that tube.(Shotgun cleaning kit works well here, I even attached a drill to the other end of the brush and it worked well.)

That "aluminum cover" should be removed. It is not used on your applicaton. It is for motors that do not have a hollow tilt tube.

When F_R posts, I listen! I believe the "aluminum cover" is the threaded support tube from a splashwell mount as described at the following link: http://www.iboats.com/Corrosion-Res...2384187--**********.400981747--view_id.192769

Loosen the nut with a wrench while holding the "aluminum cover" firmly without crushing it with a vise or pliers. I try to save everything useful for future boating projects but that's just me. Good luck!

Thanks guys for the help. I was able to do just as Willyclay had suggested and tube came right off. I kind of thought that was the way it went, but when it didn't budge when i tried it, I thought I better check with the experts. A little WD-40 and the nut cam right off.
Cable fits right in and is working great. Thank you as always to this forum, don't know what I would do without it.
