Anybody have any pictures or designs of your home made outboard stands you can post?

I need to build one for a Johnson 115 this weekend, preferably one that I can have the engine mounted to, while still being able to get to all the tilt mechanisms behind the bracket, since the engine is locked down. I need to see what is binding up back there while it's on the stand.

Thanks.

Re: Outboard stands

what I use is a engine stand for a automobile engine, their cheap and can hold a lot of weight.. build a block of wood 12' x 12' x 2.5 and bolt it where you would bolt the car engine, then set the outboard on it,I had my rude 140 sitting on mine for 3 years.and you can roll it around. its the pic. on the top left.. A bunch of leftover 2x4's, a chunk of 2x12 ply-lam and some locking wheels from Harbor Freight.

Re: Outboard stands

Here ya go. That's a Merc 500 on it. If it were me, I'd shift to 2x6's for anything bigger. I also like the 2x12 (solid) as opposed to my original drawing w/3 2x4's. And after it has been done, I'm thinking of reinforcing it right where the 48-deg mark is. I only have some drywall screws there now, I'd like to lag in something a bit heavier.

Don't trust all of the angles, they should work but something was a bit off. I just forced a few things together to get the 5" setback I was looking for, so the OB sits nice & straight (enough). And obviously, check the measurments to make sure yours will fit before cutting.

Only difference in the ones I build are that the 2 X 4 s are turned 90degrees for strength (4 inch dimension going front to back for uprights ) and I through bolt with 3/8 inch all thread.

Re: Outboard stands

Both are probably really good ideas. Maybe I'll incorporate them on whatever I build for my 650.

Re: Outboard stands

And yet another good idea. Mine hasen't fallen apart yet, but I do believe I'll be making some improvements. I had a couple hours to design & build the stand, pull the motor & run it over to my parent's house for the winter (Snowbirds, room for my junk while they're gone...). Now that it's on, I can see where these things would definetely help. While designing, my head started to spin as to what went where...

Added the cross brace and cleats.

I didn't feel like changing the aspect ratio on the drawing - too lazy.

I use something similar in design, however I put a cross support for the skeg to rest on. It keeps the motor's weight from twisting the transom clamp.

The trickiest part is the balance, with the majority of the weight carried high up. I sometimes remove the LU to lower the center of gravity.

Re: Outboard stands

This is going to be a handy thread.Be needing one in the near future for my 110.Got to take it off to get the boat painted right anyway, plus it will be easier to work on the motor and to paint it up and such.I have a small version for my 7.5 rude someone gave us years ago. Thanks guys.

Re: Outboard stands

Thanks for all the response guys, some really good ideas there.

HAHA...don't think the walker would hold my 115, but it looks good for that engine.

My biggest problem is I need to be able to tilt the engine on the stand, so I may have to build something that I can bolt to the wall, or else the stand may tip over.

Thanks again for all the ideas.

Re: Outboard stands

Wasn't planning on showing you that stand for your 115.:D More so for someone with a smaller one, looking at this thread.

We are gonna weld up a nice one for a V4 soon. Basically, the design is a rectangular frame, made of 2 x 2 tubing, with heavy duty casters. Then, near one end, about 6 inches from the end. There will be a vertical rectangular frame, of the same 2 x 2 tubing, triangulated in both directions. Now, a 2 x 12 piece of lumber attached to the top of the vertical frame. If you make your bottom frame long enough, you can easily tilt the motor up.
This make any sense? Could draw it in the next day or so if need be.
