How do I find the year and model number from the serial number on the engine? One engine has the number above G2307161 and the other one year older I think is 397265RPH. I have been told the RPH means the powerhead has been replaced. Any information to determine the year nd or model would be appreciated.

Call a dealer and see if they can still run it thru dealer port....it may still be working since the BRP collapse

If you google Johnson outboard serial numbers to get date, you'll find that they changed the ID's several times. Your numbers don't seem to correspond with the protocol for ANY of the eras. Also, if you try to google by HP, a 120 does not come up either.

That is the serial number not model....has to come thru dealer or factory.

Late model Johnsons had serial numbers that ended in 2 letters. The letter codes are published on the net and easy to decipher. Middle aged Johnsons identified the year by the last 2 digits of the serial number. Old classic and antique Johnson serial numbers vs. the year are clearly posted in Hunn's Old Outboards book.

Regardless, the model numbers should be engraved somewhere on the powerhead.
